Deciding on a business name can be a complicated endeavour. Firstly you need to choose a name that fits your brand, but making sure it’s available is just as important. There’s no use falling head over heels in love with a business name, only to find it’s technically available, but not quite…

ABN Lookup
The ABN Lookup is the first place to check for business availability. This is the official registry of all companies, sole traders and partnerships in Australia. You can search a keyword or business name to see if the name is currently registered in the country, and access limited details on the company as well. Trademarks
Trademarks are registered brands, phrases and IP registered underTrade Marks Act 1995. It copyrights the IP and is used for brand names, products and taglines for example, that operate under a business name. This is used as an extra level of protection for products and IP of a business without having to register it as an entirely separate entity. Trademarks are separate to companies, and don’t have an ABN, so won’t show up in the ABN Lookup. SO it’s important to search this site to for your business name idea.

Domain name
The domain name is the URL of your website, and is essentially the address of your business online. And often, the desired domain name may not be available, even if the company name is not taken. At a minimum, you want to own the .com and .com.au of your business name, however if .com is not available but .com.au is available, that is fine. If neither are available, this could be a reason to reconsider the name. By default most people type .com or .com.au in at the end of a URL, and if your competitor pops up when your customer is trying to search for you… well. If this isn’t an issue for you, then great. But definitely something to consider when choosing a business name.

Social Media
Just like the domain name, it’s a good idea to see if there’s a current social media profile operating under your business name. Again, not a deal breaker if there is, as they will most likely be in another country, but if you can’t claim the exact social media profile name on Instagram for example, and you plan for that platform to be your main advertising stream as you launch, then you should at least consider alternatives.
Simply check all social media platforms you want to advertise on before making that final decision.
